Roanoke City School Board elects Appel chair, Cherry vice chair and approves appointments

The Roanoke City School Board held its annual organizational meeting on July 14, 2026, and completed a slate of officer elections and administrative appointments.
Miss Appel was elected chair for the 2026–27 school year after nominations closed with no further candidates. The board then elected Mr. Cherry vice chair. Both elections were by voice vote during the organizational portion of the meeting.
The superintendent’s recommendations for administrative roles were approved: Kim Tresky as clerk and Dawn Winterwehr as deputy clerk for the 2026–27 year. The board also designated Dr. Allen Siebert as the division FOIA officer for 2026–27, as required by the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.
Board members approved several operational appointments and routine items: the 2026–27 school board meeting calendar, standing and ad hoc committee assignments, and a slate of hearing officers (David Blevins, Dr. Lorraine Lane and Dr. N. Wayne Tripp) at a rate not to exceed $150 per hour.
The board approved the consent agenda and an amended agenda earlier in the meeting; amendments shifted the appointment of hearing officers into the organization section and moved the Virginia High School League (VHSL) membership item to immediately follow the consent agenda.
Patty Atkinson, director of athletics, presented the VHSL membership applications for Patrick Henry High School and William Fleming High School. She described VHSL as a statewide, voluntary organization that organizes interscholastic activities and detailed the membership fees and insurance assessments. The board approved both schools’ VHSL memberships and granted permission for Sunday play in emergency situations.
What happens next: these personnel and officer appointments take effect for the 2026–27 school year as recorded in the meeting minutes. Policy revisions reviewed later in the meeting were presented for first reading and will return for adoption at a subsequent meeting.
