Committee recommends $71,000 training-room upgrades for Monroe fire department

The Monroe Finance and Taxation Committee voted to recommend city approval — and forward to the council as appropriate — of planned upgrades to the fire department training room, with a spending authorization not to exceed $71,000.

The fire chief (listed in the transcript as "Chief roofer") described the existing classroom as original equipment from 2010 and said the proposed improvements would create an interactive training space, permit remote participation, and serve as an emergency-operations center for large incidents. "This upgrade would, allow us to really move into the future for training," the chief said, and added that the quoted budget was "just over $71,000," including about $3,200 in tax that the city expects not to pay; the chief estimated net cost will likely be nearer $68,000.

A committee member moved approval and another seconded. The clerk took a roll-call vote and the motion passed with the recorded 'Aye' votes from members present.

Why it matters: the upgrades are intended to broaden training access for on-duty personnel and volunteers, host remote instructors, and add capabilities to receive live video and information during severe-weather or other multi-agency incidents.
