Melvin asked for board approval to install life-jacket cabinets at multiple boat launches and said Habitat and other local sponsors have agreed to build and fund the units.
"If it saves one person's life, whether [an adult] or a child, this is done very well for our community to have here," S10 said.
Commissioners discussed placement, signage and the honor-system approach; S10 acknowledged some jackets could be stolen but said sponsors would replenish units as needed. The board directed Melvin to work with county staff (transportation/parks staff) to select marked locations and coordinate installation logistics.
The board approved the request by voice vote with no recorded roll-call tally; S4 moved, a commissioner seconded, and the chair called the matter approved.
What happens next: Mr. Melvin will coordinate with county staff on exact ramp locations and installation scheduling, and the project will proceed under an honor-system model with sponsor-provided replacements.
