The Marion County Board of Supervisors voted to establish a temporary moratorium on acceptance, review or approval of applications and permits for digital asset mining, cryptocurrency operations, data processing centers and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in unincorporated Marion County. The resolution, effective immediately upon adoption on June 23, 2026, runs through July 1, 2027, unless the county enacts a new ordinance sooner.
Board members cited the absence of a specific county ordinance and flagged concerns about fire hazards, emergency response preparedness, potential environmental contamination, appropriate setbacks from sensitive uses and visual impacts. The resolution directs the Marion County Zoning Commission to develop a comprehensive ordinance addressing siting and regulation of such projects and returns the matter to the board for consideration of formal rules.
Supervisor Jim Mueller moved and Chair Kisha Jahner seconded approval of the moratorium; the motion carried with both members present voting aye and Supervisor Steve McCombs absent. The moratorium applies to projects not currently permitted or already under construction as of the resolution’s effective date.
