Age Friendly Millinocket committee announces AARP recognition, library programming and local projects

Members of the Age Friendly Millinocket committee shared a range of community updates at the July 14 meeting, including an AARP Beacon Community Award, new and ongoing library programs, community garden needs, summer events and preliminary transportation and workforce initiatives.
The committee chair announced the group had been selected to receive an AARP Beacon Community Award and said the recognition ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 6 at a maritime museum in Bath; up to six committee members may attend. "We've been recognized," the chair said, adding that the committee expects promotional coverage tied to the award.
Library representatives described expanded summer services and social programs for older residents: senior coffee chats, a history-buff roundtable, chair-yoga classes, a weekly crochet group, extended summer hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and a new adult summer-reading program that enters participants in prize raffles.
The library will also host LIHEAP (energy-assistance) meetings locally to make services easier to access for residents who otherwise would have to travel to Lincoln or Bangor. The library representative said these sessions have filled quickly in the past and more details will follow.
Other updates included a small food-security grant from a Maine food-council network to support local efforts, an MOU with the Sierra Club to pilot "transit to trails" transportation to outdoor spaces, and workforce-development conversations (a proposed construction academy at a regional technical center, training for CDL and trades, and engagement with a community development financial institution). Committee members also noted ongoing community-garden maintenance issues (a leaking water barrel and pump parts needed) and the weekly summer concert series running Fridays through Sept. 4 from 6–8 p.m.
The committee will take August off and reconvene Sept. 15; members were asked to save the Oct. 6 date for the AARP award ceremony if they wish to attend.
