Randleman approves commitment to maintain river access for Deep River State Trail blueway

The Randleman Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Aug. 6 to approve a letter committing the city to maintain two proposed river access points along the Randleman Greenway that would be part of the Randleman Dam to Randleman Blueway segment of the Deep River State Trail. Interim City Manager Shain Sexton introduced the request on behalf of Randolph County.
Mary Joan Pugh, Randolph County trail coordinator, told the board that "The Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority (PTRWA) has committed to provide the land for the river access including a parking area, access road and launch area and to maintain the project area." She said Randolph County will provide the $25,000 match, administer the grant and file for reimbursement. Pugh told the board the grant application is due Sept. 6, 2024, and that, accounting for grant deadlines, she expects the project to be completed within three years.
The two proposed access points are already maintained as part of the Randleman Greenway: one near the shelter at the Presnell Street trailhead entrance, and another near a small parking area at the sewer easement on Naomi Street. Mayor Pro-Tempore Michael Dawkins moved to approve the city letter of commitment; Alderwoman Melissa Allred Blalock seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.
The county will submit the application and administer the matching funds; the board's vote provides the municipal commitment the application requested. The application deadline is Sept. 6, 2024.
