Economic Development Partnership presents draft housing study and workforce initiatives

Sally Clark of the Hillsdale County Economic Development Partnership presented the group's annual update and said the EDP has circulated the first draft of a countywide housing study conducted by the DeSalvo Group. Clark said the housing study will inform future decisions about workforce housing, developer recruitment and whether to approach projects city‑by‑city or on a countywide basis.
The EDP also reported a wage and benefit survey of local manufacturers intended to help businesses be competitive, ongoing business retention visits, partnerships with Michigan Works on workforce development, and regional outreach to site selectors and state economic partners. Clark said the EDP is planning a 2026 Manufacturing Day to showcase local manufacturing careers to students.
Commissioners asked about the make‑up of the housing study committee and whether the study will recommend tools such as a land bank; Clark said the draft raises a land‑bank option and the EDP will bring stakeholders together to discuss recommendations once the draft is finalized.
No county action was required; commissioners and staff were encouraged to participate in upcoming review meetings.
