Committee seeks GHHS input before first reading of wireless‑device policy

At the June 9 Labor & Policy Committee meeting, Superintendent Kristin Perkowski reviewed a recent change in state law and legal options from counsel related to Policy 5209, which governs student use of wireless communications devices.
Perkowski said Grand Haven Area Public Schools (GHAPS) and Grand Haven High School (GHHS) provided a recommended approach that included comparisons with other districts and student survey data. The committee asked GHHS administration to attend the next committee meeting to present their recommendation in person.
The committee agreed to send its recommendation to the full Board for a first reading on July 20. Committee members discussed holding a special meeting before Aug. 3 to allow time for a second reading and to give the District time to communicate any policy decisions to families before school starts.
Separately, Committee member Eickholt suggested additional language for Policy 3302.02 (Naming of Facilities); the committee agreed to incorporate that language and bring it to the Board for another first reading. The committee also completed second readings for Policy 3303.01 (Memorials & Retirement Commemorations), Policy 4203 (Corporal Punishment and Limited Use of Reasonable Force), and Policy 3116.01 (District Social Media Accounts and Moderation) with no further edits required.
Next steps: GHHS administration will be invited to the next committee meeting to discuss Policy 5209; the committee's recommendation will be transmitted to the Board for a July 20 first reading.
