The Cobb County Board of Zoning Appeals on July 15 approved several variance requests with conditions aimed at limiting environmental and commercial impacts.
David Campbell (V66) received approval to allow access and maneuvering on a non‑hardened (gravel) surface for a flag lot driveway. Campbell told the board his lot’s topography and a planned Georgia DOT widening of Highway 92 made full paving impractical for the full length; Cobb DOT acknowledged ongoing design work and staff recommended a 25‑foot paved apron to the right‑of‑way, with the applicant to coordinate with GDOT. The board approved V66 5–0, subject to traffic and stormwater comments.
In V84, Louisa Aldridge, representing the property owner, asked the board to legalize an existing large accessory garage. The owner plans to remove large gravel areas, install an asphalt parking area with striped spaces, expand landscaping, plant 3‑inch oak trees to meet canopy requirements, and install stormwater measures. The board approved V84 5–0 with conditions that require the owner to submit permitting drawings and remove a 344‑sq‑ft trailer from a non‑hardened area within 60 days.
For V85, Kimberly and Jason Barfield requested retention of a 13‑foot privacy fence and multiple accessory structures. Staff and stormwater management raised questions about impervious surface but stormwater staff estimated the property’s coverage was near but likely within the R‑30 limit; the board approved V85 5–0 with a stipulation that accessory structures not be used for commercial or residential dwelling purposes.
Votes at a glance: V66 — approved 5–0 (subject to traffic & stormwater comments); V84 — approved 5–0 (submit permits, remove trailer within 60 days); V85 — approved 5–0 (accessory structures not for commercial/residential use).
The board said approvals would be contingent on applicants completing the standard permitting process and meeting development inspection and stormwater requirements.
