The Monroe County Board of Commissioners on July 16 amended and ratified resolution 2026-27 to acknowledge that the Monroe County Jail exceeds its functional capacity, citing the sheriff’s office assessment.
The board’s chair moved an amendment to soften the language and make clear the board was recognizing — not independently evaluating — the sheriff’s determination. The amendment, which changes the second bullet of the resolution’s “now therefore” section to adopt the sheriff’s finding, was seconded and approved by voice vote.
County legal staff said the resolution is a general, technical statement of support and not a substitute for detailed capacity or functional‑capacity determinations. ‘‘What we are saying is … the board acknowledges the sheriff’s office’s determination that the current population of the Monroe County Jail exceeds its functional capacity,’’ the chair said when moving the amendment.
Commissioners said the issue had been discussed at a July 9 work session and that more detailed vetting — including bed counts and functional‑capacity analysis — is the responsibility of the sheriff’s office, the board of judges, and the county council. The board ratified the amended resolution by voice vote.
The resolution will be forwarded to relevant stakeholders for any further review or action; no additional funding or operational directives were adopted as part of the ratification.
