Long Beach approves MDOT activation MOUs for five intersection projects

At its Dec. 17 meeting the Long Beach Board of Aldermen approved entering memoranda of understanding with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to activate five city projects, mainly intersection improvements, funded through Gulf Regional Planning.
City engineer David briefed the board: "I think it's 5 projects. All of them are or 4 of them are intersection improvement projects," he said, noting funding had been made available through Gulf Regional Planning and that the MOU is the next step to get the projects moving. David and the mayor explained that engineering work could begin sooner, but construction is likely at least a year away; some projects may also require right-of-way acquisition.
Why it matters: the package includes widening and intersection improvements on Cleveland, Klondike, Pineville (Klondike), West Road Street and the Jeff Davis/Railroad corridor. Entering MOUs with MDOT allows the city to secure the federal/state funding and proceed into engineering and design phases.
The board voted to consider the five projects together rather than individually and approved the motion on a voice vote. The mayor said detailed activation packets will be made available in the minutes after approval and that the city engineer would explain project specifics when staff takes up the items in detail.
Next steps: engineering will continue design work and staff said they expect at least a year before construction begins; some projects may need right-of-way to be acquired before bid-ready design is complete.
