Lindenhurst board directs staff to refine draft business incentive program

At its Aug. 9 meeting the Lindenhurst Village Board reviewed a draft incentive package intended to aid new and expanding businesses in the village.
Village Administrator Clay Johnson presented the Lindenhurst Economic Assistance Program (LEAP), describing two proposed grant tracks: Retail/Restaurant Improvement Grants, offered as 50/50 reimbursements of up to $30,000 with a minimum project size of $10,000 and a requirement that the project generate sales tax; and Business Development Grants, 50/50 reimbursements of up to $20,000 with a minimum project size of $5,000 that do not require sales‑tax generation. "Staff has drafted the following incentive programs for retail/restaurant businesses and other commercial businesses to assist with new economic development," Johnson told the board during discussion.
Trustee Dawn Suchy proposed that the village work with the local Chamber of Commerce to support new and existing Lindenhurst businesses; the board agreed in concept and asked staff to develop partnership details for a future meeting. Board members also agreed to add COVID‑related expenses to the list of eligible items for the grants.
Trustee Pat Dunham asked that the board revisit the village ordinance banning cannabis sales as part of broader economic‑development discussion; she requested that the topic be placed on an upcoming agenda. A resident who identified herself as serving on several area chambers of commerce voiced support for the board partnering to help Lindenhurst businesses.
The board reached consensus to have staff prepare a final LEAP program for consideration at a future Village Board meeting; no formal vote on LEAP was taken at the Aug. 9 session.
Next steps: staff will prepare program details, including eligibility rules, any COVID‑resiliency bonus language, and draft partnership terms with the Chamber for board review.
