Molalla tables regional letter pressing BLM on river log jam after additional study requested

Assistant City Manager Matt Cortell briefed the council on an April 6 meeting and field visit with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff, including their state director and a hydrologist, and on conversations with Congresswoman Bynum’s office. Cortell said the BLM hydrologist “did not believe that there is any risk of that log jam letting go in a catastrophic way” and that BLM plans to monitor the site and deploy 24/7 video if necessary.
Mayor Keiser said Congresswoman Bynum’s office requested time to conduct additional research and that the city should coordinate with federal staff and local fire chiefs before pushing a wider regional letter. "She asked for a little bit of time before we push this through and appreciates what we're doing," the mayor said, and he proposed tabling the letter until the congresswoman’s staff completes its follow-up.
Council agreed to table the letter and to allow staff to continue coordination with BLM and regional partners. No substantive policy or funding action was taken at the meeting; the letter will be revisited when staff and congressional staff provide further information.
