Dana Point council repeals two municipal code sections deemed redundant with California code

Dana Point’s City Council voted unanimously on July 21 to repeal two local code sections that staff said are redundant with updated state building standards.
Jonathan Lightfoot, a city staff member, told the council that the city adopted the 2025 California Building Code and associated local amendments, effective Jan. 1 of the year. Staff identified Municipal Code sections 8.04 (the uniform sign code) and 8.08 (the tent code) as duplicative for plan review and inspection and recommended repealing them to simplify and clarify local regulations.
The council opened the public hearing; no members of the public spoke. Council discussion was brief and focused on the staff recommendation to streamline the municipal code. A councilmember moved to adopt the staff recommendation; the motion was seconded and approved by a unanimous voice vote.
Lightfoot said the repeal would align local procedures with state code, reduce redundant language, and remove provisions no longer referenced for plan review. The council closed the public hearing and voted to repeal the two sections.
The ordinance change will remove the local sign and tent sections from the Dana Point Municipal Code; staff said the repeal will not affect current plan-review practices because state code provisions now govern those topics. Staff offered to provide follow‑up materials if councilmembers or members of the public seek additional detail.
