Glide Elementary teacher says summer program boosted students’ math and engagement

Nikki Copeland Sprague, a kindergarten teacher at Glide Elementary, told the Glide School District No. 12 board that this summer’s 18-day program drew 73 students and averaged about 50 students per day.
The program, Sprague said, used a theme called “Learning Takes You Around the World,” tied activities to the Olympic calendar and combined daily reading and math practice on IXL with live lessons and art. “Our theme was, Learning Takes You Around the World,” Sprague said, adding that students completed country studies, practiced poems and took weekly math-fact checks.
Sprague reported staffing of three teachers, two instructional assistants and three high-school student volunteers. She said 34 students posted multiple weeks of improvement on math assessments and that every student showed at least one week of progress. The program concluded with a gym-based world fair and an indoor “pedantathlon” of modified Olympic games.
Board members praised the program’s community-building and learning outcomes. One member noted student exit-survey suggestions ranged from more days of instruction to playful requests such as bringing animals for a short, supervised visit.
The superintendent and board thanked Sprague and the volunteer students; Sprague told the board she believed the program’s hands-on projects and student presentations fostered excitement for learning. The report was delivered during the board’s regular meeting and requires no formal board action beyond being included in the minutes.
