The Oakdale Police Department won tentative approval for a $190,300 grant from the California Highway Patrol cannabis tax grant program to boost DUI enforcement, equipment and training.
Sergeant Ben Savage told the council the competitive award funds 24 eight-hour saturation patrol operations, four DUI checkpoints, advanced roadside impairment and standardized field sobriety training for officers, one drug-recognition expert training slot, and attendance at the California Narcotics Officers Association conference. The grant includes $90,000 earmarked for a DUI enforcement vehicle and $40,000 for a DUI checkpoint trailer.
Savage said local traffic collisions and injuries are trending upward and that additional enforcement and training should help reduce DUI-related injuries. He described the grant's administrative flexibility and said there are no onerous penalties if some scheduled operations cannot be completed; unfulfilled operations typically roll into subsequent grant cycles.
Council praised the grant effort and asked staff to return with purchase details when the department selects a vehicle. The council voted unanimously, 5-0, to accept the grant.
What comes next: The department will submit the resolution to the state for final approvals and then begin scheduling operations and training; vehicle procurement will follow state approval and will be presented to council for review if costs exceed budgeted amounts.
