Selectboard tables resolution affirming due process and constitutional rights after debate

Cairle Ault read a proposed Resolution on May 12 that would condemn attacks on due process and affirm the constitutional rights of Proctor residents. The Resolution text was attributed to Peter G. Franzoni of Rutland. Several Selectboard members and attendees expressed support for the underlying intent but raised concerns about specific phrasing and what the Selectboard would be expected to do if it adopted the language.
After discussion, Bruce Baccei moved to table the Resolution to the May 27 Selectboard meeting for further review; Jay Thorton seconded. The motion carried 4–1. The Town Manager was directed to contact neighboring municipalities to determine whether they had adopted similar resolutions or had modified language.
Board members and speakers agreed to re‑examine the Resolution text at the May 27 meeting; Andy Maass suggested board members review Article I, Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution and the Vermont Constitution in advance of the discussion.
