Wasco County demo shows new real‑time mapping tool for Mosier emergency response

Stephanie Krell, Wasco County public information officer, told the Mosier City Council on Feb. 19 that the county has rolled out a new mapping and communication system intended to allow firefighters and emergency responders to update evacuation zones and response information in real time.

Krell said the system will integrate with Everbridge and that a mobile app to access the maps is being developed. "The new mapping and communication system will allow firefighters and emergency responders to update evacuation zones and emergency response information in real time," she said.

Sheridan McClellan, Wasco County Emergency Manager, noted the program’s initial access is limited to Wasco County Emergency Management, local districts and city officials; local submissions for map updates will be reviewed by county staff before publication. Councilors asked who would be authorized to publish changes and about public access. Krell said the city can send information but updates will be reviewed by county staff prior to release.

Councilor Lindemyer asked whether the tool would be distributed as an app. Krell said an app is under development and will be available soon. Councilor Campbell asked whether the system is statewide; Krell said similar systems exist in some other states but this region is among the first in Oregon to implement it.

Why it matters: the county mapping system aims to give city staff and regional responders a way to push timely, localized evacuation and emergency messages during wildfires, floods or other incidents. Councilors were offered training from county staff.

The council did not take action on the presentation; staff and county officials agreed to follow up with training and access details.
