Director reports staff change, ADU study session and general plan work ahead

Fairfields staff told the Planning Commission on July 22 that the city is preparing to recruit a permanent chief building official after the recent departure of the prior official and that several policy and zoning items will return to the commission for study and recommendation.
"Jeff Thomas, who is our, chief building official, he left the city of Fairfield, last month after 6 plus years, for an opportunity in another jurisdiction," Mr. Atkinson reported. He said Gary West is serving as interim chief building official and that a recruitment will take place later this year.
Atkinson said staff will schedule a study session to align local accessory dwelling unit (ADU) regulations with recent state-level changes, followed later by a formal zoning ordinance amendment. He also said the city attorney will present a session on the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and that phase 2 of the general plan implementation will include new zoning districts and ordinance amendments.
Atkinson noted that a planned appointment to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) advisory committee will be tabled for the foreseeable future and that Commissioner Paul will remain the planning commission's representative for now. He also reminded commissioners about an attendance policy in the Fairfield Municipal Code that limits unexcused absences to two within any 12-month period and lists exemptions such as medical or family emergencies.
No formal actions or votes were taken on staffing or the ADU schedule at the meeting; Atkinson provided the report for commission awareness and future agenda planning.
