Putney Selectboard approves schedule to fly Pride, Juneteenth, nonbinary and Disability Pride flags
Summary
On May 28 the Selectboard approved a request from the Equity & Inclusion Advisory Committee to fly the Progress Pride Flag (June 1–30), Juneteenth Flag (June 18–20), Nonbinary Pride Flag (July 13–15) and Disability Pride Flag (July 25–27); the town flag policy allows only one flag at a time.
The Putney Selectboard voted May 28 to approve a schedule for flying several flags requested by the Equity & Inclusion Advisory Committee.
Corin "Swift Everdy" Kennedy-Spielman read the committee's Pride Month and Juneteenth statements and asked the board to fly the Progress Pride Flag, the Juneteenth Flag, the Nonbinary Pride Flag and the National Disability Pride Flag on specified dates. The committee noted that town policy permits only one flag to be flown at a time.
Selectboard member Aileen Tulloch moved to fly the Pride Flag June 1–30, the Juneteenth Flag June 18–20, the Nonbinary Pride Flag July 13–15 and the Disability Pride Flag July 25–27. Rebecca "Bex" Slattery seconded the motion and it passed.
During the reading, the committee's written statement included historical context on Juneteenth and a line noting, "visibility without protection is a trap," which the reader relayed as part of the committee's message about safety and recognition during Pride Month. The board did not expand the policy; it approved the requested schedule under existing flag policy.
