Planning and code enforcement: 25 permits since January; violation letters continue

Buxton’s code enforcement officer reported 25 new home permits since January and ongoing violation letters; some property owners have complied and others have not responded, while the town is working with property owners who reached out.
Patty McKenna briefed the board on building permits and code-enforcement activity, saying her office issued 10 new house permits in June and 25 since January with a mix of stick-built homes, modulars and accessory dwelling units. McKenna reported that on April 1 the office mailed 16 violation letters: three recipients had not responded, two had complied, and others have been in contact and are working toward resolution. Since April she said 12 additional violation letters were sent; two of those are resolved, seven are working toward compliance, and three are not cooperating at this time.
McKenna said she is willing to work with residents who engage with the office and noted three letters sent to businesses operating without permits; two of those businesses are working to obtain required permits. When asked about enforcement she said she only shuts businesses down if they are causing harm and otherwise prefers to work with operators to come into compliance.
