The Long Beach Advisory Plan Commission voted 4–3 on July 20 to limit the number of permitted accessory structures on a lot to one, excluding a primary garage. Chair (speaker 2) made the motion to limit accessory buildings to one per lot; after discussion and a second, the motion carried 4–3.
Commissioners debated whether to allow two accessory structures without requiring property owners to seek a Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) variance. Committee member (S4) moved to permit two accessory buildings ‘‘provided that they fit within the other requirements of this section,’’ but that motion did not carry. Opponents said allowing two by right could lead to more detached garages, golf-cart storage and cumulative clutter in yards; proponents argued homeowners should have flexibility without repeated variance requests. Commissioners repeatedly noted that the BZA remains an option for owners seeking exceptions.
