Council authorizes APERS back-pay after enrollment errors; mayor to attend training

Lockesburg authorized full back-payment to APERS for employees who were not enrolled from day one; employee portions will be recovered via payroll deduction. Mayor Martin will attend APERS training July 23 to seek clarification on mandatory enrollment rules.

Clerk Kyah Talkington told the council that Arkansas Public Employees' Retirement System (APERS) rules require employees be enrolled from their first day of employment, not after a 90-day probationary period as had been assumed. As a result, Clerk Lydia Poore and employee Kim Ayers were not enrolled on time, and Recorder/Treasurer Larenda Montgomery had not been enrolled as an elected official as required.
