Assistant Chief Richard Haywood outlined plans for a structure fire training exercise, saying the department has been offered use of a house within its response district and will use it for a controlled burn or live-structure training when weather permits. He said the training will particularly benefit junior firefighters by giving practical experience in a controlled environment.
Haywood also reported requesting an amendment to an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) because equipment pricing has increased since last year; if the amendment is not approved, he said the City will submit a payment request, noting the City’s cost would still be less than the cost of one self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). He said all firefighters not certified in NIMS700 and ICS100 are in the process of completing those free online courses by a Dec. 31 deadline; the department plans expanded medical and trauma training to improve on-scene assessments and coordination with EMS.
