TxDOT official reports schedule changes for Uniroyal and Loop 20 work; I‑35 lanes to be expanded
Summary
A TxDOT-area engineer told the committee the contractor had aimed for September–October completion of a Char project but now expects work into early next year; Uniroyal improvements will expand I‑35 main lanes to three lanes each way and Loop 20 traffic switches may be delayed as contractors propose precast bridge elements to speed construction.

In response to a question from S1, S3 (an agency official) provided status updates on several regional roadway projects. S3 said a contractor had earlier indicated an intention to complete a Char project by September–October, but that schedule now looks more like the beginning of next year. S3 also said contractors are on board for remaining direct connectors at I‑35 and I‑69 and that letting for Uniroyal improvements is occurring after prior utility conflicts were resolved.
S3 described the Uniroyal (Uniroil) improvements in detail: the project will expand the I‑35 main lanes to three lanes in each direction, reconstruct the interchange, add an overpass at I‑35 and SH‑84a (Char), change a frontage road from two-way to one-way and add turnarounds. On Loop 20, S3 said the planned traffic switch from east to west this summer will likely be pushed back a few months; the contractor has proposed using precast columns, abutments and caps so elements can be built offsite and installed to minimize traffic impacts.
S3 said some work could begin as soon as August or September for certain connectors and that letting of the Uniroyal improvements has been brought back into the current fiscal year following resolution of utility conflicts. No formal schedule change or contract amendment was recorded on the meeting record; S3 described the current intent and contractor proposals.
