Cherokee County adopts 30‑day moratorium on data‑center permit applications

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on June 21 to adopt a 30‑day moratorium on receiving permanent permit applications or plans for new data centers, effective immediately.
Brantley Day, presenting the resolution, told the board the short pause would “run through August 20” if adopted and allow staff and legal to develop an ordinance that could be extended up to 180 days. “It would give staff the opportunity to go back and do the research necessary, work with legal to develop an ordinance to address the data center use in Cherokee County,” Day said.
Commissioners said the pause is not an outright ban but a chance to update county rules in light of larger, more resource‑intensive facilities. One commissioner described modern data centers as “scary because they’re so big” and said the county should be prepared with ordinance language before any future applications arrive.
The board also voted unanimously to call a public hearing on Aug. 18 to consider a longer moratorium and proposed ordinance. The hearing will give residents and stakeholders a chance to weigh in before any extended restrictions are adopted.
