Algonac City Council voted to award the Activity Center roof replacement and authorized the city manager to sign the contract. City Manager Bryson told the council the city received multiple funding sources for renovations of the former Algonac Elementary School, including $200,000 in ARPA funds, a $500,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Education, and $50,000 from the FY26 budget, which together create a $750,000 project budget for the center.
Bryson said the administration recommended GC Commercial Roof Systems after receiving two quotes. He described receiving a low bid for the roof work of $201,000 and an additional flooring quote of approximately $55,000; during the council motion a figure of $402,000 (including additional wood replacement as needed) was presented for the contract award. Bryson explained that the grant-funded approach means the city will pay and then be reimbursed under the grant terms.
Councilmembers raised the prospect that an opened roof could reveal higher costs, and staff warned the final price may grow if additional repairs are needed once the roof is opened. The mayor asked about timing; Bryson said crews hope to start in two to three weeks, which would allow the city to reopen parts of the facility that are currently closed.
Next steps: The contract was authorized and Bryson will coordinate start dates and any necessary change orders if concealed damage requires additional work.
