MCPS says declining enrollment will reduce need for relocatable classrooms over time

MCPS staff told the committee that, because district enrollment is declining, the budget for relocatable classrooms is projected to decline gradually. Staff said they are removing about 90 older units this summer at holding schools and that elementary and high-school boundary changes approved by the Board will begin implementation in 27–28 and reduce long-term demand for relocatables.
Councilors asked whether the boundary study outcome will materially lower relocatable counts; staff answered that implementation timing (27–28 and beyond) will gradually reduce need but that funds must remain available for removal costs and placement of new units when projects require them. The committee agreed with the board's request to retain the project with a gradually declining expenditure level.
