Fire chief warns DOT bridge weight change, OSHA comments could affect response times

Fire Chief Chad Lady told the Soldier Township Board that the department has responded to 608 calls so far this year and is evaluating records-management software after receiving two bids and awaiting a third. Chief Lady said more than 2,700 comments have been submitted regarding new OSHA requirements and that guidance about Department of Labor enforcement remains unclear; he plans to attend a public meeting via Zoom on Sept. 12, 2024 to follow developments.
Chief Lady also reported that the Department of Transportation no longer exempts fire trucks from bridge weight limits, a change he said could negatively impact response times where multiple bridges exist (the city of Topeka has over 20 bridges). The department currently has one open position; no additional hiring details were provided in the meeting.
