Planning commission recommends changes to bicycle parking rules, sends code amendment to council

The Longmont Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously recommended changes to the city's bicycle parking standards on July 22 and will forward the proposed ordinance language to City Council for consideration on Sept. 22.
Transportation planner Ben Ortiz presented PZR-2026-14b, which updates Land Development Code section 15.05.080j. Ortiz said the changes clarify how far racks may be from building access points, add dimensional standards for overhangs and shelters, add a limited cargo-bike rack requirement tied to the number of short-term racks, and remove the short-term rental two-per-unit requirement. He told commissioners the Transportation Advisory Board reviewed the revisions on July 13 and offered no additional comments.
Commissioners said the changes make the rules easier for developers to implement without undermining the city's multimodal goals. Commissioner Amy Saunders asked whether the amendments reduce the city's commitment to active transportation; Ortiz answered, "Short answer, yes," when asked whether the revisions improve usability while maintaining long-term encouragement of multimodal transportation. Vice Chair Earl moved to adopt the recommendation and Commissioner Edgley Wells seconded; the motion passed 7-0.
With the commission's recommendation, the item will go to City Council in September for final action. Ortiz asked commissioners and the public to contact the planning division for details about appearing before council at (303) 651-8330.
