Wilson County's rapid population growth featured prominently in candidate answers. Mayor Randall Hutto said "Last 7.5 years, 85% of the growth in Wilson County has happened inside the cities" and stressed protecting open space and property rights. He described the county's land-use plan and recent downzoning measures affecting roughly 311,000 acres and said the county promotes commercial zoning to preserve rural areas while protecting revenue.
