Superintendent warns reclassification will reshape Echo SD 5 athletics, likely making Echo among largest 1A schools

Superintendent (S4) told the board the district is monitoring enrollment closely and is using rolling three- and four-year averages to make admissions decisions and anticipate classification changes for athletics.

On reclassification, the superintendent said Echo would likely be counted among the largest 1A schools under the new system and explained that the new classifications primarily change basketball and volleyball league assignments while football uses a separate committee and differing roster-size categories (8-, 9-, 11-man). "Echo would be, I think, the largest or the 2nd largest 1 a school in the state under the new classification systems," the superintendent said, and then listed potential league opponents (Joseph, Wallowa, North Powder, Pilot Rock, Pine Eagle).

The superintendent cautioned that some sports follow different districting processes—wrestling, soccer and track use separate classifications—so the practical effect varies by sport. Board members asked clarifying questions about waiting-list triggers for classes under 25 and how incoming eighth-grade classes affect high school slotting; the superintendent said seniors would be prioritized when necessary and that the incoming eighth-grade cohort would change averages used for admissions.
