Air sampling recovered two STEC isolates from passive collectors; active samplers detected none
Jul 23, 2026
Researchers used passive cloth collectors (139 samples, 31 locations) and active mechanical samplers (173 samples, limited deployment) and recovered two STEC isolates from passive samplers and none from active samplers; presenters concluded that under current methods "air is a limited vector for STEC movement in this region."
The full story
Dr. Julie Case described two air sampling methods: passive cloth collectors deployed for 12'24 hours and active mechanical samplers run for roughly one hour. She reported that out of 139 passive'collector samples the team recovered two STEC isolates; the active samplers (173 samples at 6,000 liters of air per deployment) yielded no STEC isolates.
