The board voted to instruct district staff to draft a letter of support for the Mapleton Water District’s Phase 1 FEMA application for funding to study and design an additional holding tank.
"The Mapleton Water District has been awarded $3,000,000 from FEMA, for an additional holding tank," said the Mapleton Water District representative, who asked the board to indicate support for the district’s application and for exploring easement possibilities on district property. The representative described the Phase 1 work as environmental and feasibility studies that would precede any construction decision.
Board members debated the content and scope of the requested support. One board member moved to "instruct Sue to work with Vanessa and get a letter written" backing the Phase 1 request; the motion was seconded and the board indicated support when asked, "All those in favor of the support as stated." Board discussion made clear a letter of support would not commit the district to an easement or final approval of placement; staff said any easement or legal agreement would come later and would be negotiated and reviewed with legal counsel.
Staff said a single letter could address both support for the Phase 1 studies and a district willingness to explore whether a school property easement might be feasible, with any actual easement to be handled separately. The board asked staff to produce a draft for review at the next meeting and to confirm signature procedures for the final letter.
