District readies for state facilities assessment, asbestos abatement and water testing

Staff updated the board on a cluster of facilities items: Cognia accreditation reviewers will visit campus Nov. 13, state facilities and ADA assessment teams are scheduled for Nov. 14–15, and the district continues work tied to asbestos abatement and broader facility repairs.
Staff said asbestos abatement remains part of the project list and that some facility work (lighting, drains, scope work) is being scoped for contract scheduling. "The state knows that there's high facility needs across the whole state," a staff member said, noting that TAP (Technical Assistance Program) grants are helping districts access assessments and, in some cases, abatement.
On utilities, staff said the district recently switched to well water but still saw city water usage on billing; facilities staff are investigating cross-flow and will close off lines as needed. The district will schedule an operator training at month-end and pursue further water testing (copper, lead, asbestos) to ensure compliance; staff said closing off the cross-flow should eliminate ongoing city water usage bills.
Board members discussed timeline and whether the assessments will result in funding opportunities; staff said statewide data from these assessments will help advocate for funding and inform district priorities. Staff will report back after the state assessment and with a timeline for abatement completion.
