Board OKs initial abatement drawings, adds $3,500 for architecture support

The Mapleton SD 32 board agreed to move forward with initial asbestos-abatement planning and procurement work, authorizing PBS to prepare abatement drawings and approving an additional $3,500 for Wilson Architecture to support bidding and procurement. Board members emphasized the need to sequence abatement and replacement of finishes to avoid leaving occupied spaces without flooring.

"My biggest worry ... I don't want abatement to happen and then be sitting there without flooring waiting for a whole process to go," the Presenter said, arguing for a phased approach and clearer timing. The board discussed two procurement options: (1) separate contracts (abatement now, finishes later, estimated $5,000–$10,000 for a subsequent small-scale contractor) or (2) an integrated general-contractor package that would add roughly 20% to overall costs but could streamline scheduling and reduce risk of delays.

Board members instructed staff to begin the first phase (design and abatement bidding documents) while returning later with proposals for the finishes contract and timeline. The board also noted PBS's proposal assumes the district will provide digital drawings and that PBS's scope does not include replacement of flooring or finishes.
