Council rejects two proposed stop‑control changes after safety debate

Peters Township Council debated an ordinance to add stop controls at two intersections — East Highland Drive at Center Church Road and Robin Hood Lane at Center Church Road — after residents requested studies and staff forwarded traffic‑engineering recommendations. Staff described the proposals and noted the issue often concerns whether the through road should have the stop or the side road.

Councilmembers split on safety tradeoffs. Some members worried a stop on a steep incline would cause sliding in winter; others, citing safety and prior successful 3‑way stop conversions, favored the changes. A motion to approve stop signs for Center Church and Robin Hood failed 4–3; a later motion to install the stop at Center Church and East Highland (per the traffic engineer recommendation) also failed after a roll‑call/voice sequence that produced a 4–3 outcome against. Miss Shaner said, "I don't think stop signs are needed either," expressing opposition; staff noted the recommendation came from a traffic engineer and that the concern was largely perceived danger rather than a documented crash history for one intersection.
