District rolls out multi-factor authentication and reports few account compromises

The district technology presenter described a year-long project to migrate accounts to a centralized identity system and roll out multi-factor authentication to protect student and staff accounts. For younger students the system uses Chromebooks with a badge that logs them in; grades 3–12 use a pictogram as a simple form of multifactor authentication, and staff use six-digit codes or optional security keys.
"Every student in grades 3 through 12, by default, in addition to their password, they have a pictogram," the technology presenter said and added the district has had "maybe 3" account compromise incidents since the rollout. The presenter said the system is intended to reduce phishing and protect persistent student data over many years."
