Jackson County extends data-mining moratorium to allow zoning ordinance work

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 9 voted to extend a moratorium on data-mining land uses while the zoning commission finishes a standalone data-mining ordinance.
Zoning staff (Becca) told the board the moratorium will allow the commission to draft the ordinance after completing a broad zoning update scheduled for public hearing Oct. 20. "This timeline with the new resolution to approve the moratorium will ensure that the ordinance will be developed carefully with adequate review," Becca said. The board discussed how much time the commission would need and settled on an extension to Aug. 31, 2026, with the board able to lift the moratorium earlier if the ordinance is ready.
Charlie White of Aurum Capital Ventures, who participated online, urged the board to consider non-distance-based measures for setbacks and to evaluate noise in decibels for newer cooling technology. "If we are going to talk about setbacks that would not be measured in feet, that would be measured in decibels," Charlie said, adding he provided videos for staff review. Supervisors emphasized the moratorium is intended to buy time for thorough drafting and public input. The amended resolution (1142-09-09-2025) carried on the board's voice vote.
