Fire Chief Joe Mirra told Inside Leesburg that technology has reshaped firefighting in Leesburg, from massive early thermal imaging systems to compact portable units and the transition from gasoline-powered extrication tools to battery-operated equipment. "Thermal imaging cameras...they are easy to use. They're very, very portable," he said.
Mirra described the department's geographic growth: he said city limits now exceed 25 square miles and that, through mutual aid and intergovernmental agreements, the department assists across nearly 100 square miles. He also emphasized operational trade-offs as new equipment and capabilities introduce different training and logistical needs.
Mirra contrasted that modern environment with the department's earliest days, when a lack of telephones and radios made notification and coordination much slower. He called early notification "the big thing about fire," adding that time is the enemy of responders.
