County approves supplemental engineering agreement for Walnut River bridge replacement

Public Works Director Curtis Mader told the Board the Walnut River bridge replacement on SW 80th St. has been on the county’s Capital Improvement Plan since 2023 because of traffic volume and safety concerns. He said Butler County was awarded a $2 million grant to fund the replacement and presented a supplemental engineering agreement with MKEC to convert the plans to Kansas Department of Transportation format, attend KDOT meetings and handle permitting.
Mader described the contract as time‑and‑materials with an estimated supplemental cost of $20,000 to $30,000; the original design contract was $80,000. Commissioner Dan Woydziak moved to approve the supplemental agreement and Commissioner Darren Jackson seconded; the motion carried 4‑0.
The supplemental agreement will allow the county to proceed with KDOT submittals and permitting for the bridge project funded in part by the $2 million grant.
