Kaufman County seeks continued state support for indigent defense coordinator position

County staff asked the Commissioners Court on May 5 to approve submitting a Texas Indigent Defense Commission (TIDC) application to continue partial funding for an assistant indigent defense coordinator position.
“This year, the salary that the county will be paying for this person in the 3rd year is $42,751.17, but the state or the indigent defense, TIDC, will be paying $27,435.60,” Pam Corner told the court, summarizing the grant’s phased funding structure. Corner said the grant began in 2024 and that the TIDC share declines annually (80% in year one, 60% in year two, 40% in year three and 20% in year four).
Corner asked the court for permission to submit the application and said she will return each year with a resolution. Commissioner Moore moved to approve the request and the court voted in favor. The action authorizes staff to pursue the TIDC funding application; Corner said she would bring a formal resolution to the court in a future meeting.
