Commissioners authorize resolution to seek auto-theft task force grant

Kaufman County commissioners on March 31 approved a resolution to pursue funding for an Auto Theft Task Force after comments from Sheriff Beavers about the scale of vehicle theft in the county.
"As you know, theft is one of our biggest issues in the county," the sheriff said, arguing that a coordinated task force with prosecutors and municipal partners would help. He told the court the sheriff’s office recovered more than $5,000,000 in stolen property in the last year as part of his justification for pursuing grant funding. The sheriff said the grant appears to be an approximately 80/20 structure with the county responsible for a 20% share and the grant covering the remainder.
County staff noted the resolution includes a placeholder for a grant number; the court approved the resolution with the understanding that staff will fill in the grant number if and when the award is received. The court carried the motion by voice vote.
Why it matters: The grant would create a formal task force with DA and municipal partners to target auto theft; approval allows staff to pursue the funding and return with the grant number and award documents.
