Staff reminded commissioners that the most recent update earlier this year included adoption of physical-space standards intended to mitigate wildfire hazards around new buildings. "The city council did take a deeper dive into this after the recommendation from the planning commission and really refine it to new understanding and the higher standards, for creating that protection around buildings," the staff member said.
Staff said the standards introduce requirements for plant species, retention of existing vegetation where practical, and additional measures to create defensible space around structures. Commissioners were informed that these standards will continue to be applied as part of site-specific reviews and that staff would bring more detailed guidance as applications come forward.
