Dr. Amber Denali, the new president of Great Basin College, told the board the college has identified possible asbestos in several campus buildings and needs a targeted Brownfields technical assessment to determine mitigation steps before renovations. "We brought in a little over $11,000,000 last year," Denali said to illustrate the college’s recent success in grant funding and to explain why the Brownfields assessment is a critical next step.
Nicole Maher, the college’s grant director, explained the Brownfields assistance would provide $50,000–$100,000 in technical help (an assessment visit and report), not a direct cash award to the college. Because the Nevada system of higher education is state‑owned, the college needs a local sponsor to apply. Maher said the county’s sponsorship would not require direct financial contribution beyond a small amount of staff time to submit the application. Commissioners approved the sponsorship and asked staff to identify any potential legal or financial implications before final execution.
