Middle school guitar program expands inventory and doubles enrollment with community grant support

Kent Schwaters, director of the William Monroe Middle School guitar program, told the board the program has grown substantially in three years with equipment purchases and increased student interest. “We now maintain an inventory of 18 electric guitars, 5 bass guitars, updated classical guitars, and professional grade amplification,” Schwaters said, adding student enrollment has doubled to 40.
Schwaters credited principal support and a generous grant from the Wednesday Music Club for the expansion and described how guitar has become a pillar of arts education at the middle school, supporting students who may not thrive in other settings. Two student performers demonstrated progress for the board, which responded with applause and praise.
