Rebecca Larson (S15), a parent from Hammond, used the public-comment period to ask the board to continue supporting the district’s ROV program. "The ROV program has provided structure without stifling his creativity," Larson said, adding that the program helped channel her son’s curiosity and gave him a clearer sense of a future career path.
Larson emphasized that benefits extend beyond her child: she said the team’s repeated regional and world-level invitations reflect consistent student achievement and committed mentors. "That kind of excellence on a consistent basis doesn't just happen by accident," she said, citing mentors and program structure. She asked the board to provide ongoing support similar to athletics rather than treating ROV as an extracurricular afterthought.
The comment was received during the public-comment portion of the meeting and elicited thank-yous from the chair; the board did not take separate funding action at the meeting. Larson requested recognition of the program’s role in supporting students with diverse learning needs.
