Brooks County Commissioners unanimously accepted the final Brooks County 2025 Hazard Mitigation Plan and approved a resolution to submit it to the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
The decision followed a public hearing at which Judge Eric Ramos said the plan covers both the county and the City of Falfurrias and noted the statutory schedule: "it is required by law every 2 years." Ruben Ramirez, the county Fire Chief and emergency management coordinator, told the Court that past grant applications were denied because relevant strategies were not included in prior plans and said the current USDA grant application closes in May.
Commissioner Nora Salinas moved to accept the plan; Commissioner Aaron Trevino seconded the motion, which passed by unanimous roll call. The Court did not take action during the hearing itself but approved the plan and accompanying resolution to transmit the document to the Texas Division of Emergency Management so the county can pursue state and federal mitigation funding.
Next steps include submitting the approved plan to TDEM and continuing work on grant applications tied to mitigation priorities identified in the plan.
