Planning staff previews four Unified Development Code amendments for June

Planning staff member Chris Baker told the BK Planning and Zoning Commission that staff is preparing four Unified Development Code amendments expected for consideration at June meetings. The proposals include: requiring accessory buildings to use materials complimentary to the primary structure; tightening building articulation standards to avoid long, flat faces on new commercial buildings; aligning plat review timing with external statutory 'shot clock' requirements; and adding property posting (signage) as part of public notice for zoning changes.
Baker said the intent on accessory materials is to ensure accessory structures are visually compatible with the main building rather than, for example, allowing metal sheds adjacent to a brick house. He noted the building articulation change aims to add visual variety and avoid very long flat planes on newly constructed commercial buildings. On plat review timing, staff seeks changes to reflect statutory deadlines; and on property posting, the city would add a sign-posting requirement to better notify neighbors of zoning applications. Baker told the commission to expect one or more of these amendments to appear on June agendas.
