South Texas College to launch avionics program after $50,000 county support

South Texas College told the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court it will launch a two-year avionics program this fall and thanked the court for a $50,000 contribution to buy the equipment needed to run the curriculum at a county airport facility.
Olivia Gomez, STC's director of external affairs, said the court’s $50,000 contribution will help fund avionics equipment and build direct pathways into high-skill, high-demand careers. STC president Solis said the program will be open to high-school students and adult learners and is the only avionics program in the southern part of Texas outside Waco. "This is a long-awaited program...it's a 2 year program," Solis said, noting the course will offer entry points for students and adults seeking new careers.
Commissioners praised the program as a regional workforce investment and noted that partnerships with local airports and the Prosperity Task Force helped secure the training site. The court voted to approve the contribution as part of routine agenda actions.
